After what seems an eternity, Team India finally turned in a fantastic performance which left them on the verge of a historic win in South Africa.

I missed most of the Indian first innings, but on a lazy Saturday afternoon, switched on the TV, expecting to find the Safs steamrolling us. What I saw instead was the duo of Sreesanth and Zaheer striking in succession, leaving the South Africans reeling at 5-3, one of their worst starts ever, ultimately bundling them out for 84.

Sreesanth then extended the agony for them, claiming his first 5-wicket haul in Tests. What must have got their goat even more was his comment crediting insights provided by his idol, Allan Donald.

South Africa, chasing 402 for victory, were on the back foot at 163-5, with Prince and Boucher at the crease.

Laxman again proved that he is a class act, playing within himself to score a fine 73, and shared a crucial partnership with Zaheer, who turned in a fine all round performance.

I liked Sreesanth’s attitude, and the young man will go far. He was truly the pick of the bowlers. What I liked even more was his willingness to go head on with Andre Nel, who gave him a bit of lip. He just stepped out and smashed the next one over the bowler’s head for a huge six, and then went on swinging his bat at Nel, with some pelvic thrusts thrown in as well, for good meaure. This was truly hilarious, and much needed.

I feel it is high time someone cautions Nel, who is becoming a disruptive influence due to his boorish behaviour, especially as the umpires seem to turn a blind eye towards his antics.
