SEBI has given the go-ahead to institutional investors for short selling of equities. Chairman M Damodaran said the infrastructure was in place for short selling by institutions, which till now, was only allowed for retail investors.

The RBI, which was opposed to this, has also allowed this since the trade would be delivery-based and would have no scope for leveraging, which means the FIIs will have to posses the security before they indulge in short selling.
