German Sebastian Vettel shocked the Formula One community as the youngest driver to win a Grand Prix, doing so at the age of 21, leading from pole position to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The previous youngest winner was Fernando Alonso. This was a fantastic win for the STR Ferrari team that till a couple of years ago was known as Minardi, the backmarkers who always made up the last two numbers on the grid.

Watching the race, it was great to see Vettel’s composure as he drove superbly in the rain, when most other established drivers preferred to play it safe. The other bit of exceptional driving came from Hamilton, who clawed his way from 15th to 2nd before finishing 7th after all the pit lane poker.

Massa qualified ahead of Hamilton but could not take advantage of that, managing to finish 6th, one point behind Hamilton in the overall standings.

As Vettel stood on the podium and the national anthems (German and Italian) were played, it almost seemed a throwback to the days when this would be another routine Michael Schumacher victory !! :)
