Racism reared it’s ugly head yet again, as Kiran Pande, an India born engineer working with Chevron, took her former employers to court for wrongful termination of service.

Kiran was sacked in 2003 after serving 15 years with the company. She claimed that in a three year period from 2000 to 2003, she had to suffer suffer racist remarks and discrimination at the hand of her supervisor, Rex Mitchell, now the company’s chief compliance officer.

When she escalated the matter to Mitchell’s supervisor, he gave her a choice; either leave the company, or staying put for around 18 months and getting along with Mitchell.

A San Francisco jury concluded that Chevron acted unfairly and has awarded Kiran Pande $5.5 million ($ 3 million for past and future economic losses, and $2.5 million in punitive damages).
