The TOI had an article about the Centre rolling out some heavy duty sops for all mothers in government service.

In an order effective 01-Sep-08, maternity leave has been increased from 135 days to 180 days per child for upto two children. Secondly, they are also entitled for paid leave for two years during their career for taking care of both children. This leave would not have any impact on their seniority, a critical factor in government jobs.

This child care leave can be taken till the kids are 18 years old, and could be for reasons ranging from simply bringing them up, or during times of sickness, examination etc.

This is a far cry from the leave available to women in the private sector, which is typically 12 weeks, and most women go on leave just a few days before delivery, in order to maximise their leave after the child is born.

I can already hear the guys howling !! First, higher tax exemption slabs for women, and now this !! :(
