The sweltering heat of the past few days has finally prompted the Met Dept to ‘declare’ a heat wave condition in Pune, Vidarbha and Marathwada.

I’ve been watching the temperature displayed outside the Met Office this whole week, and it is discouraging to say the least, as it touched 42.1 degrees Celsius yesterday, and hasn’t dipped below 40 degrees since Suday. In the evenings, when one would expect it to be more pleasant, the temperature is around 41 degrees !!

All this in a city that used to be called the ‘Pensioner’s Paradise’ and was once famed for not needing even fans, let alone air conditioners !!

Things have changed over the past 15 years or so, with more construction, less greenery and the rat race to be in the most ‘happening’ city, with proliferation of numerous fancy glass tinted office complexes, shopping malls et al, and the ruthless destruction of trees to make way for these concrete monsters.

According to the statistics from the Met Dept;

The April temperature has not gone above 41.4 degree in the city since 1990. During the last 18 years, the temperature has crossed the 41.3-degree mark and above only twice. On April 27, 2007, and April 24, 2001, Pune had witnessed 41.4 degrees temperature.

We seem to be all set for some pretty ‘hot’ times in the coming weeks !! 🙁
