Kayanis in D-I-Y mode as workers continue strike

The Kayani Bakery at Pune, renowned for it’s cakes and Shrewsbury biscuits, has been in the news lately due to the unrest caused by their workers. Things reached a head, when one of the partners, Rustom Kayani was assaulted and the union leader was called for questioning by the cops.

As things stand, the workers still haven’t returned to work, and the partners have now decided to take upon themselves the task of keeping the bakery running, especially with Christmas around the corner.

I think one of the biggest mistakes they made was allowing the worker’s union itself to form. This merely added fuel to the fire. In many small establishments, workers in general are quite content and satisfied. However, there is invariably one person who wants to create trouble or fancies himself a leader, and that is where the problem starts.

I was amazed to know that they have a turnover of around Rs.4 crores !! This season will no doubt see a fall in sales, but their biggest asset is their loyal customer base and goodwill, built up over so many years. Hope they get out of this mess !
