The Indian Premier League got off to a sizzler with the Kolkata Knight Riders thrashing the pants off the Bangalore Royal Challengers, thanks to an amazing unbeaten knock of 158 off 73 balls from Brendon McCullum. The KKR won the match by 140 runs.

McCullum pulverised the BRC attack, hammering 10 fours and 13 huge sixes to bring them to their knees, putting up 222 on the board. Bangalore skipper Rahul Dravid seemed to be in a daze from the moment McCullum launched his attack, and his team could manage a pathetic 82 in 15.1 overs.

From the Bangalore Royal Challengers, I really liked Praveen Kumar’s attitude and performance, both with bat and ball and even while fielding. He was the only bowler to escape a thrashing (except the final over), and then the only batsman to get into double digits when they batted. Pity he had to end up on the losing side.

What I found irritating in the TV telecast was the fact that the advertisers now seem to have “discovered” ad slots to use even while the match was in progress. The bowler would be walking back to his mark and the screen would zoom out, to allow some stupid ad with shrieking sound to be displayed. While we have now got used to the ad popping up immediately after completion of an over or fall of a wicket, this new method is irksome to say the least.
