IHF Secretary Jothikumaran stung by Aaj Tak
Indian Hockey plunged into even newer depths as the IHF Secretary K Jothikumaran was “stung” in an operation conducted by TV channel, Aaj Tak.
While watching the IPL match, I switched channels, and then kept on watching as their hidden camera showed the extent to which the rot has set in. From receiving money for his role in getting a tournament organised, the story then moved on to his accepting money (Rs.5 lakhs) to get a player selected in the national side for the Azlan Shah Cup at Kuala Lumpur in May, all without even knowing anything about that player.
The channel of course went to great lengths to explain the player himself had nothing to do with this episode and was only a random name selected from the probables at the training camp at Bangalore. Their point was to prove that money can buy a place in the Indian national team, regardless of performance or ability.
Predictably, Jothikumaran has resigned, even as IHF supemo K P S Gill said he would be sacked.
Personally, I find it hard to believe that he was the only one involved, though. Given the structure and working of the IHF, it would be quite difficult to push these kind of things through without anyone else being the wiser, or getting suspicious, though he was probably the front man for such deals.
Seems the IHF Pandora’s Box is yet to be fully opened !!
