welcome_sprites.jpgMicrosoft has come out with a pretty decent offering for a change. Welcome to Windows Live SkyDrive. Sounds neat, but what exactly is it?

Well, it is a free and secure personal storage area on the net, and all of 5 GB !! Those already using MSN services like Hotmail can login using the same id and password.

Users can upload and store their files in three folders,  Personal – for private access, Friends – friends who are also Windows Live users and Share with the World – which is a publicly accessible area.

There is no restriction on the type of files that can be stored on the site, so users can put up docs, photos, spreadsheets, zip files, pdf’s, ppt et al. Quite useful for those who frequently need to access their documents from different locations and do not want the hassle of lugging around their pen drive all or a CD the time. This makes sense, as there are some offices where pen drives are banned or are to be deposited with security.

The other good thing is that there is a limit of 50 MB per file, so you would like to store a large video, you can do so without worrying about available space.

Given the current scenario where documents like a PAN card are essential for any financial transaction, it makes sense to store a soft copy in your personal folder on this site in case photocopying is not immediately possible. Once copied, it can then be printed as many times as desired.
