Ford, Emburey snub BCCI

The BCCI got a stinging response from the “newly appointed coach” Graham Ford, as he rejected their offer to be the next coach of the Indian cricket team. As if that was not enough, the other candidate in the fray, John Emburey also declined, leaving the BCCI with plenty of egg on it’s face.
For too long, they have made outrageous demands, expecting people to fall in line, whether it was the players, the coach or any other support staff. Finally, their arrogance got what it deserved, and it is amazing how they could not see it coming.
It was surprising to note that Ford cited family committments for refusing the offer. Obviously, he and his family would have known what the offer entailed. The cricket calendar is also drawn up in advance, so the schedule for the year was also known before. The Board’s decision to offer only a one year contract also didn’t make any sense. By the time a foreign coach got to know India and the players, he would probably be nearing the end of his tenure.
This also begs the all important question: Had Ford actually given the BCCI a final confirmation that he was agreeable to all the terms, and ready to become the next coach in the first place ? Reason says he must have, for the BCCI to publicly announce his selection, unless it was sheer over enthusiasm on their part.
One of the reasons both Ford and Emburey refused could be their awareness of the shenanigans the BCCI mandarins were capable of. The internal bickering and back-biting that takes place is quite well known all around.
Wonder what happens next ? Will the BCCI now appeal to Mohinder Amarnath or Madan Lal and request them to take up the post, “for the country’s sake !!” Else they may try and persuade Ravi Shastri to help them out for one more tour.. Hopefully these guys will also turn it down and then it will be interesting to see the BCCI come out of the hole it has got itself into !!
