Biometric PAN cards on the anvil
Finance Minister P.Chidambaram unveiled the Government’s initiative on introducing biometric PAN cards. This idea had taken shape almost a couple of years ago, when the IT Dept found close to 13 lakh people having duplicate PAN cards.
Initially it is proposed to be issued only to new applicants, though it is not yet clear whether this biometric system would use a retinal or a fingerprint scan. Other PAN card holders could be migrated to the biometric system in a phased manner.
The cost of issuing a PAN card is presently around Rs.60. This new biometric PAN card, when launched, is likely to cost in the region of Rs.200-300.
