Alexa changes ranking system
Alexa has announced that it is giving it’s toolbar based ranking system the heave-ho, and are looking at ‘aggregating data from multiple sources’ to give a better indication of a website’s popularity.
Earlier, their toolbar was the main source of their rankings which meant that people often got everyone in their organization to load it and keep refreshing their site, or even having it as their home page, thereby leading to inflated numbers. This was also inherently flawed, as several users don’t want to / cannot install this toolbar. In fact, I used to even get a warning from Quick Heal Anti Virus, which refused to install the toolbar, deleting the file instead !! Secondly, it doesn’t run on Vista yet, eliminating more users.
You can see a more detailed explanation on their blog regarding their new sytem.
